Amit Limaye is the Director of the Sustainable Medical Technology Institute (SMTI) at Becton Dickinson.
The SMTI was created by BD to reduce the environmental impact of its product portfolio. Its focus areas include Materials of Concern, Alternate Modes of Sterilization, Sustainable Design for product and packaging, and developing Circular Economy solutions. As the founding member, Amit has had the opportunity to create the strategy for the institute and make it actionable.
In his 15 years at BD, he has held different roles in R&D, including Innovation and New Product Development. Amit has received the CEO Award and is also a three-time Gold Medal recipient of the Howe Award for Science and Technology, the highest technical award within BD. Prior to BD, he worked in the pharmaceutical industry and combination products industry focusing on pulmonary drug delivery. He is an inventor on 35 patents and has a Ph.D in Chemical Engineering with an emphasis on Aerosol Physics along with a background in Biotechnology. He also holds a Professional Certificate in Sustainability from MIT. Externally, Amit represents BD and serves as an Executive Committee member on the Healthcare Plastics Recycle Council (HPRC).
Outside of work, Amit volunteers his time and skills to address issues related to Social Determinants of Health, specifically around healthcare access. He serves as the Chairman of the Board at BVMI, a non-profit organization that provides free healthcare for working un-insured. He led a critical “What-if” committee at the height of the COVID pandemic, the efforts and results of which were acknowledged in FORBES. On a personal level, he enjoys sailing, vegetable farming, and is a martial arts enthusiast with a Black-Belt in Taekwondo. He lives with his family in New Jersey, where they are on a journey to making their home a zero-waste-household.
