STERIS Applied Sterilization Technologies has a global network of radiation processing centers, including sites in the Americas, Europe, South Africa, and Asia. All sites must operate with the same level of quality, with all certified to ISO 13485 and ISO 11137. Requirements for consistent Customer service emphasises the need for a harmonized approach to tasks such as qualification, installation and Customer validation. Integral to consistent service is having reliable Subject Matter Expertise.

Aligned to the industry guidance from the Society for Sterility Assurance Professionals (SfSAP), the journey of building a strong Radiation Technology Team started in 2017. The presentation will explain principal milestones and tools developed to enhance and assess team knowledge, including:

  • Harmonization of the Global Radiation Technology structure
  • Development of a competency matrix by job role/function
  • Development of requirements for demonstration of knowledge
  • Understanding of requirements needed to advance
  • Assessment of current competence level of team members in comparison with the competency matrix
  • Assessing the Gap between current situation and business requirement
  • Consultation with each team member to understand their goals and define objectives
  • Definition of training plans with precise milestones and conducting reviews to evaluate development
  • Developing training content
  • Assessment of new competencies
  • Promotion of team members to next level and increasing the team competency

The competency matrix promotes a strong working environment and job satisfaction. Team members feel supported to develop their key competencies and have a sense of engagement. The long-term gains are seen in SMEs with highly developed skill sets.

The presentation will present a case study of the journey.
