National food supply chain is one of the great issues. From agriculture to the consumer's table, a significant part of the production is lost during post-harvest, transport, storage and commerce, due to the deterioration of food products. Nuclear technology can play a major role contributing to food safety, high-quality nutrition and reducing food waste. Nevertheless, society's judgment and decision making are directly linked to perceived benefits and risks. Brazilian consumers do not know the difference between irradiated food and radioactive food and the public has major concerns about the negative health effects and environmental contamination. This presentation provides a critical review of mass media communication, introducing a collection of published articles and journalistic broadcasts, in very simple language. In response to this analysis, the authors bring important successful initiatives carried out in Brazil to inform the population, including various web-based tools to increase public understanding of food irradiation, several didactic books for elementary and high school and science communication events to industry and agricultural workers, as well as journalists and educators. Science, Technology and Innovation bring countless benefits to society and food irradiation responds to the emerging demands in health, economic and social spheres in Brazil and many other countries.
