Introduction: Approximately ⅓ of the food produced goes to waste annually, impacting agri-food systems, the environment, food security and the world economy. The environmental, social and economic impacts generated result in losses of around US$2.6 trillion per year. Objective: Elevate food irradiation to a tool capable of collaborating with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SOFI 2023 Report reveals that between 691 and 783 million people went hungry in 2022 in the world. In addition to social issues, optimizing the economy and mitigating environmental impacts are significant factors in maintaining life. Reducing food losses and waste is essential. Food irradiation uses ionizing radiation and electron beams to preserve and disinfect food. Treating food with ionizing radiation can contribute to achieving SDGs 2, 3, 6, 9, 11, 12 and 13 by contributing to mitigating hunger (2) and improving health through safe and healthy eating (3). It optimizes food systems and can therefore positively influence the issue of water and sanitation (6). It is likely to introduce innovation and new technologies in this sector (9). It is highly sustainable (11), as it naturally encourages responsible consumption and the reduction of food losses and waste (12), therefore, it contributes to climate change (13). It is estimated that by 2050 the world's population will approach 10 billion people who will need different resources, including food. Conclusion: Promoting dissemination, information and guidance, making consumers aware of the benefits of irradiated foods can be a good tool to get us closer to the SDGs.
